EDUCATION: Formed in His Communion

VBS Day One -- Our Lady of Lourdes

Vacation Bible School at St. John the Evangelist opened on July 17, 2017 with many happy faces and much excitement.  Our dedicated group of volunteers have been preparing for this week for months and were very happy to welcome the children to another week of learning, fun, and growth in Christian love.  Children entering Kindergarten through Fourth Grade during the next school year are our campers, while many youth volunteers in grades 5 through 12 make Vacation Bible School run smoothly.

The color for today was White.  It was amazing to see all the students moving from the morning assembly to class then on to games, snack, music, and crafts while wearing one of the colors most associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary, reminding us of her purity and freedom from sin.

The children learned today about the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she had been chosen to be the mother of the Son of God.  In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 1, verses 26 to 38, the children learned about Mary's "yes" to the words of the angel.  They learned that the extraordinary thing about Mary was her willinginess to live in accordance with the will of God, regardless of any other consideration.

Campers were also introduced to the beautiful prayer of the Rosary and its Joyful Mysteries, particularly the First Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation.  We encourage all VBS families to find ways to incorporate this prayer into family life.  Some possibilities include saying the family rosary in the evening before bed, on car trips, or during significant liturgical seasons.  There are many resources for saying the rosary available online and on EWTN, the Catholic television network.  Some of these resources include:

Children also learned today about the apparition of Our Lady to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France.  We discussed what happened at the apparition and why the Blessed Mother might have chosen a young, illiterate peasant girl as the person to whom she would appear.  We taught the children about the miraculous spring at Lourdes to which millions of people come each year.  The beautiful video embedded below gives a hint of the power and beauty of a pilgrimage to Lourdes.  We hope you are able to watch it with your children so that they, and you, might marvel in the mighty things God has done through the Blessed Mother.
