VBS Day Three:  Our Lady of Guadalupe

Day Three at VBS saw campers learn about St. Juan Diego and the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico City.  Like St. Bernadette, St. Francisco Marto, St. Jacinta Marto, and Servant of God Lucia dos Santos, St. Juan Diego was a humble person -- an Aztec Indian who was among the first native Mexicans to be baptized after the initial group of Franciscan missionaries arrived in 1524.

The children learned that the Blessed Virgin Mary speaks to the humble because she herself is humble.  Everything she does and all her messages point not to herself but to her son, Jesus.  They learned that Mary is our mother just as she is Jesus's mother.  So, they learned, when they are hurt, they can turn to Mary just as they turn to their earthly mothers.  When they are tempted to do wrong, they can ask Mary for help, just as they ask their earthly mothers for help.

The children also learned about the Virgin of Guadalupe's other names, the Patroness of the Americas and the Patroness of the Unborn.  Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant young woman.  The children learned that the Aztecs who lived in Mexico at the time of Our Lady's appearance did not believe that life was sacred.  In fact, they believed that their gods required human sacrifice.  This children learned that Mary appeared as a pregnant woman to demonstrate that all life is sacred.  We reminded the children that everyone, no matter their condition in life -- unborn baby, small child, adult, elderly person, handicapped person, all are precious in the sight of God.  All have the same right to life and the same value in life.

The children also learned about the Third Joyful Mystery today, the Nativity of the Lord.
