The Legion of Mary
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Praesidium
The Legion of Mary was founded in the early 1900s in Dublin, Ireland. Currently it has a presence in over 170 countries, with 4 million active members and 5 million auxiliaries. The mission of the Legion of Mary is to glorify God through the intercession of Our Lady to do the work of the church.
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Praesidium in Silver Spring, Maryland started 25 years ago. It has 12 active members and 44 auxiliaries. The members do a minimum of 2 hours of work each week. This includes visiting nursing homes, the elderly and auxiliary members, and evangelization at Metro stations. The Praesidium is led by 4 officers: President - Angelica Fernandes; Vice President - Loyda Sore; Secretary - Julian Abbott; Treasurer - Julissa French; and 8 other active members.
We encourage you to attend one of our meetings and get to know more about the work we do. The meetings are held on Fridays at 6:00pm in the Rosensteel Room of the Main Church of St. John the Evangelist. If time is a concern, you could become an auxiliary member (praying member of the Legion of Mary). Auxiliaries must pray the rosary daily and recite the Tessera prayers. Once a year all active and auxiliary members are required to attend the Acies to consecrate ourselves during a Mass held in one of the local parishes in Montgomery County. The Mass is then followed by a luncheon. See photos of our past events here!
