“Most of you know the story of Saint Katharine Drexel, one of the great saints raised up by this local Church. When she spoke to Pope Leo XIII of the needs of the missions, the Pope – he was a very wise Pope! – asked her pointedly: 'What about you? What are you going to do?'. Those words changed Katharine’s life, because they reminded her that, in the end, every Christian man and woman, by virtue of baptism, has received a mission. Each one of us has to respond, as best we can, to the Lord’s call to build up his Body, the Church.”

SERVICE: Taking Care of His Suffering Body

Mission Work

Go into the whole world”, the Risen Christ still commands us today (Mk 16:15). Relying on his companionship, St. John’s parishioners can offer their witness of an authentic and fully human life of love to those in need in other places of the United States and the world.

Mission Trip to Camden, New Jersey
For the past four summers, a group of parish high school students and adult leaders have participated in the Romero Center's "Urban Challenge" at the Pro-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Camden. There the young people have offered the gift of themselves at nursing homes, child care centers, food pantries and other works in one of the nation's most impoverished cities. The most recent trip was June 17-21, 2013.

"I found Camden to be a very humbling experience. It changes your view on the troubles of the poor, and helps you to look at them in a different light. I definitely recommend this experience for anyone looking for a service trip that is unconventional." -Patrick Newkumet, Camden 2012

Prayer for missionaries

O almighty God, Lord of the harvest of souls, we ask you to guide and bless all who have gone forth to preach the Gospel. Endow them with the gifts of generosity and concern. Send your Holy Spirit on them, that he may strengthen them in weakness, comfort them in trials and direct their efforts...We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
