Social Concerns Home

St. John the Evangelist Parish works actively to help alleviate the problems of hunger in our community and in the world. These efforts include the following:

Harvest for the Hungry

Harvest for the Hungry is an emergency food bank for poor families, run by Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Washington. On the first Sunday of each month, we collect canned and packaged food from the parish to help this worthwhile project.

Share-A-Meal

The Share a Meal Ministry collects sandwiches, fruit, and cookies for the homeless, and delivers the food to Martha's Table in DC. Martha's Table goes through 2300 sandwiches a day! Two loaves of bread and couple of packages of cheese and lunchmeat costs each of us only a few dollars and 10 minutes to prepare.

The ministry needs drivers to volunteer one Sunday each month to deliver sandwiches to Martha's Table for McKenna's Wagon.

Contributions of individually wrapped sandwiches, fruit, and cookies are collected on Community Sunday each month - details are announced in the bulletin.

To volunteer, please call Jean Chambers at 301-681-7663.

S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat)

S.O.M.E. Ministry responds to Christ's message "to feed the hungry." Once a month, donations of hot and cold food are served to the needy in the community through S.O.M.E. kitchens.

Donations are generally collected at the church, although other arrangements can be made - see the bulletin for details. Generally, hot meal donations are collected on the second Tuesday of each month from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. in the Church parking lot. Sandwich collection is the third Sunday of the month in the Kennedy Room after all Masses except the 12:30 and 6:00 p.m. Donations and drivers are needed just one day each month.
