Our parish works actively to help restore the dignity of the born and unborn, including the following efforts:

Pro-Life Ministry

The Pro-Life Ministry at St. John's is dedicated to the idea that human life is sacred at all stages of life from conception to natural death. The activities of the ministry include the following:

  • March for Life - Every January 22, the ministry sponsors a bus to the March for Life.

  • Bereavement Mass - Each year, around Mother's Day, a Mass is held in memory of those babies who have died either during or after pregnancy.

  • Clothes Collections - At least once each year, the ministry sponsors a baby clothes collection.

  • Poor Box Collections - Twice a year, the ministry sponsors a collection through the main church poor boxes to benefit local pregnancy aid centers.

  • Newborn Shower - Once or twice each year, we hold a shower to collect infant gifts.

  • Educational Materials - Periodically, information is placed in bookracks, bulletins and prominent locations to help raise awareness and educate the parish about issues affecting the sanctity of human life.

All are welcome! Any amount of time you have to offer is welcome!

Gabriel Project

The Gabriel Project is an ecumenical movement of churches committed to helping women and families in crisis pregnancies.

After calling a toll-free hotline, women are referred to the nearest Pro-Life Pregnancy Center. The pregnancy center then decides if the mother can benefit from being matched with a church to help her through her pregnancy.

The role of the church community is to help meet the mother's emotional, spiritual and material needs. St. John's is one of many churches throughout Maryland participating in this project. We are currently working with three women in the Silver Spring area.

All are welcome to participate!

To volunteer, please call Joe Hurley at 301- 598-5467.
