Purpose: Communion and Liberation (CL) is an ecclesial movement of the Church begun by the recently deceased Italian priest, Msgr. Luigi Giussani. CL began in Italy in the 1950s, when Fr. Giussani, a professor of theology, received permission from his bishop to become a high school teacher. Among his first students were a few who took seriously his claim that the event of Christ, lived in communion, is the foundation for authentic human liberation. And from this small nucleus has grown a movement in the Catholic Church that is now present in over 70 countries. There is a CL "School of Community" that meets regularly in St. John's parish.
