Boy Scout Troop 466 has thrived at St. John the Evangelist Parish since it was founded on April 22, 1952 - almost 60 years ago! It is operated by volunteer parents for boys from 11 to 18 years old, and emphasizes development of skills in service, safety leadership, and outdoor activities. Recruitment of new members emphasizes "bridging" of Cub Scouts from our very active Pack 466, but boys of all ages, with or without a Scouting background, are encouraged to join. The trek from Tenderfoot to Eagle Scout is legendary, and Troop 466 has generated some legends of its own!

Our outdoor program is vigorous and rewarding for the Scouts and the participating adults alike. Between September and June, we have at least one campout or extended activity (hiking, biking, rock climbing, skiing) each month. The weekly meetings emphasize a monthly theme (first aid, backpacking, wilderness survival, space exploration, to name a few), as well as key skills that underlie safe and enjoyable low-impact camping and high adventure.

Each summer, we have a one or two week campout. For the last several years, two out of every three summer campouts have been at Goshen Scout Camp (Virginia) and/or nearby parks (Deep Creek, Ohiopyle, PA, the Adirondacks), followed in the third year by a BTOW - Big Trip Out West. Past trips have been to Yellowstone/Teton National Parks, Glacier National Park, as well as, Mt. St. Helen's and Olympic National Park in Washington State.

One evening each month is devoted to Advancement - emphasizing achievement of skills, the Patrol Method, Merit Badges, and growth in rank from Tenderfoot through Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and finally to Eagle. This involves all the Scouts, each at his own level and pace. Older Scouts develop leadership skills while assisting the younger scouts in advancement, and all arrive at the monthly campout living up to the Scout Motto: Be Prepared!

Troop 466 takes seriously its responsibility to the community, and participates in various Service Projects during the year. These have included assisting in the St. John's School Bazaar, several conservation projects in the regional parks, and Christmas in April.

Each December, St. John's Troop 466's Christmas Tree Sale provides over 800 trees to customers from far and wide. Founded by the Troop in 1968, the Tree Sale provides all the funds for the Troop's operating budget as well as the Summer Campouts and BTOW. In addition, it supports the annual Jack Jardeleza Memorial Scholarship, and a number of other donations by the Troop. All Scout families are required to pitch in.

Troop Meetings are held every Monday, 7:00 - 8:30 PM in the Kennedy Room.
